Russ Koppendrayer just updated the 2013 Cowlitz County Yearlist:

"The 2013 list includes the new taxonomic order which includes the counter-intuitive placement of falcons between woodpeckers and flycatchers. Also you will find some updating of abundance codes, but more needs to be done before next year.

January was launched from the springboard of a record CBC and continued with some good coverage and nice finds in Cowlitz County. We already have identified 114 species for the year."

For more information contact Russ Koppendrayer through our Wildlife Sightings area, where you can find this list (and others) as a pdf file.

Townsend Solitaire - Image WDFWRuss Koppendrayer just updated the 2012 Cowlitz County Yearlist:

"We continue to chip away at the yearlist, making a few additions here and there. I just did a check and we only have one species available in the yellow code (Townsend's Solitaire) and none in the blue or green codes. This means that all further additions will be species that occur in Cowlitz County less than annually.

Still at 196 species we have a good shot at breaking last year's record of 203.

Let's get out there and find some unusual fall migrants."

Whimbrel - Image: USFWSThe big excitement in May was the first ever record of Whimbrel in Cowlitz County. A small flock was found in the Woodland Bottoms on the 25th and grew to 33 birds a couple days later. There were still 9 present on the 31st.

We are now at 187 species which ties our second best year ever and we still have 7 months left, but besting last year's record may prove formidable as we have already found nearly all the annual species.

For more information contact Russ Koppendrayer through our Wildlife Sightings area.

Red Shouldered Hawk (USFWS)

On Tuesday, February 21, a Red-shouldered Hawk was seen at the west end of the county park in Willow Grove, Longview.

Local birders have been seeing a Red-shouldered at this location through late fall, but no recent sightings had been reported. This may or may not be the same bird.

Still this is not a common local sighting.
