In 2006 Columbia Land Trust (CLT), a not for profit conservation organization, approached the Willapa Hills Audubon Society (WHAS) to partner on the restoration and stewardship of the Nelson Creek property.  The property is 180 acres (increased to 200 acres in 2008) located near Cathlamet, WA in Wahkiakum County.  It is adjacent, across Highway 4, from the Julia Butler Hansen Columbia white-tailed deer Wildlife Refuge.

The memorandum of agreement between WHAS and CLT goal states that we are to:  Jointly develop a baseline assessment documenting existing conditions of the Nelson Creek property; develop a restoration and stewardship strategy for the property to enhance habitat for the Columbian white-tailed deer and other species of fish and wildlife; establish a partnership for long-term stewardship of the property; and, to provide an opportunity for local environmental outreach and education.

Our Mission Statement is:  Restore the Nelson Creek property to a healthy natural habitat that supports a diversity of native plants and animals.  Establish riparian forest as a major habitat component to benefit Columbian white-tailed deer, forest birds, fish and amphibians.  Provide wildlife-related educational and recreational opportunities for people.

So far, activities on the property include baseline assessments of topography, hydrology, vegetation, birds, Invertebrates, mammals, herpes, buildings, and aerial photographs.  Conservation goals and objectives have been adopted for each category and stewardship plans are being developed.  Grant funding has been obtained to aid in baseline work.  There have been several work parties doing building maintenance and cleanup as well as putting up bird boxes.

As the project moves into 2009, restoration plans are being developed, as well as some ongoing surveys and monitoring will occur.  Building demolition, vegetation surveys, weed control, and thinning/underplanting are being planned.

The Nelson Creek Stewardship Committee invites you to participate in the projects and work parties as they come available.  VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!!  Contact the Nelson Creek committee or Russ and Ann Kastberg, 360-274-7091 or 360-431-5541 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
